The East Asian Seas Congress

When: 8th to 12th December 2003
Where: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The Congress was organized by the GEF/UNDP/IMO Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) and the Department of Environment Malaysia, and hosted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment Malaysia. It was a response to the regional implementation of the WSSD Commitments for the Seas of East Asia. Workshop co-organizers included the International Maritime Organization, United Nations Environment Programme-Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-Based Activities, Ship and Ocean Foundation, UNDP-GEF Regional Service Center, and WorldFish Center.

The Congress featured the Ministerial Forum on the Sustainable Development of the Seas of East Asia and the International Conference on the Sustainable Development of the East Asian Seas: Towards a New Era of Regional Collaboration and Partnerships.

IEEE Homeland Security Conference

When:10th to 11th December 2003
Where: Providence, RI

Eric Anderson attended the IEEE Homeland Security Conference in Providence RI, and gave a presentation on the Crisis Management System, emphasizing the similarities between the oil spill response community post-Exxon Valdez and the Homeland Security community at this point in its development.

Roddy Thomas attended POLLUTEC, 4-5 Dec, the largest annual Pollution, Waste Disposal and Environmental exhibition in France.

The Water Framework Directive Conference

When: 12th November 2003
Where: London, UK

Roddy Thomas attended this 1 day conference, 12 Nov., on the Water Framework EEC Directive; the most significant environmental directive to be published by the EEC in the last 20 years. The implications on industry, government, scientific community and the general public will be far ranging, and will entail a 16 year schedule to be fully implemented by Member States.

Estuarine and Coastal ModelingConference on Estuarine and Coastal Modeling

When: 3rd to 5th November 2003
Where: Monterey, CA

Malcolm Spaulding, Craig Swanson, and Matthew Ward presented papers at ECM8, the 8th International Conference on Estuarine and Coastal Modeling held in Monterey, CA, on 3-5 Nov. Other ASA staff, including Tatsu Isaji and Paul Hall, were coauthors of papers covering such topics as sediment transport modeling, hydrodynamic modeling, integrated monitoring and forecasting systems and flushing models. These papers will be published in the conference proceedings midyear 2004.

Electric Power Research Institute Workshop

When: 16th to 17th October 2003
Where: Columbus, OH

Craig Swanson participated in the Electric Power Research Institute Workshop on 316(a) Issues--Technical and Regulatory Considerations, held in Columbus, OH, on 16-17 Oct. He coauthored the paper, "Probability-based impact assessment for a 316(a) demonstration--an example from Entergy Nuclear Vermont Yankee," with Mark Mattson (Normandeau Associates), Mark Hutchins (Hutchins Consulting) and Lynn DeWald (Entergy).

Argentina Oil & Gas Show

Together with Eduardo Yassuda, ASA's South American Manager, Roddy Thomas attended this conference 5-8 Oct.

COPEDEC VICOPEDEC VI Conference

When: 14th to 19th September 2003
Where: Colombo, Sri Lanka

Roddy Thomas attended the conference 14-19 Sept., the largest coastal engineering meeting outside the USA and Europe.



International Conference on Port and Maritime R&D and Technology

When: 10th to 12th September 2003
Where: Singapore

The objective of the International Conference on Port and Maritime R&D and Technology was to promote research and development and application of advanced technologies for port and maritime management and operations. The 2nd International Conference on Port and Maritime R&D and Technology was held from 10 to 12 September 2003 in Singapore. The Conference's theme was,
"Port and Maritime R&D and Technology - Challenges for the Next Decade"

The Conference aimed to bring together researchers in the academic and research institutes, consultants and practitioners in the port and maritime industries to share new developments, concepts and practices and exchange views and experiences.

In conjunction with the conference, an exhibition featuring the latest R&D and technological products, systems and services in the port and maritime industries was organised.

Coastal Zone Management Through Time

When: 13th to 17th July 2003
Where: Baltimore, Maryland

The Coastal Zone conference series was the premier international gathering of ocean and coastal management professionals. The largest of its kind, this biennial symposium attracts over 1,200 participants from around the world.

TOS-OIA Ocean Conference

When: 4th to 6th June 2003
Where: Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, New Orleans, Lousiana, USA

The Oceanography Society - Oceanology International Americas Ocean conference spanned a broad range of topics and featured presentations in the following areas:

  • Marine science (e.g. processes associated with air-sea interaction, water column, seafloor)
  • Technology (e.g. sensors, models, platforms, observational systems)
  • Operational oceanography (e.g. decision aids, forecasting and nowcasting, product development and delivery)
  • Policy (e.g. resource management, international programs, sustainable development)
  • Education (e.g. formal, informal, remote learning, kindergarten and higher)

This conference was a unique integration of these areas, providing presentations on some or all of these areas in each session. The presentations was integrated according to various societal issues including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Climate (e.g. air-sea interactions, monitoring, forecasting, impact on sea level)
  • Marine operations (e.g. safety, coastal/offshore engineering, naval architecture, shipping, prediction of spills),
  • Natural hazards (e.g. storms, tsunamis, icebergs, beach erosion, strong currents)
  • National security (e.g. observation systems, data communication, operational modeling, tactical decision aids)
  • Living and non-living resources (e.g. fisheries, aquaculture, oil and gas, management for sustainable use)
  • Health of marine ecosystems (e.g. decline in biodiversity and productivity, impact of climate and human activities on ecosystem, harmful algal blooms),
  • Public health (e.g. marine pharmaceuticals, diseases and toxins in fish and shellfish, fate of pollutants in water).

2003 International Oil Spill Conference

When: 6th to 10th April 2003
Where: Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

The 2003 International Oil Spill Conference (IOSC) was held April 6-10, 2003 at the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The conference theme for 2003 was: Prevention, Preparedness, Response and Restoration—Perspectives for a Cleaner Environment. The theme included a view toward the future with special emphasis on appropriate strategies for improvement.

This IOSC is the 18th biennial gathering since the first event in December 1969. IOSC is the preeminent gathering of oil spill response experts from around the world and is a unique opportunity to catch up on all major developments in thefield and interact with the most knowledgeable people tied to those activities.

International Maritime and Port Security Conference

When: 21st to 23rd January 2003
Where: Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) organized an International Maritime and Port Security Conference (IMPSC) in Singapore on the 21st to the 23rd of January 2003. In line with the efforts of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the IMPSC aimed to promote maritime security and highlight the various international efforts and initiatives in this area. The theme of the conference was" Maritime Security - Changing Landscape and New Challenges".
